By Arnold Krusemark Its time to start planning this year’s yard and garden work. The garden catalogue(s) are arriving. The first thing we do is to page through the catalogue to see what is new for this year. As usual we see some new varieties - especially sweet corn and tomatoes.

GIRLS LOSE TO HBC

The MCC Rebel Girls were on the road Friday night in Hills taking on the Hills Beaver Creek Patriots. MCC was coming off a tough loss to Adrian Ellsworth on Tuesday night and was hoping to avenge a close loss to the Patriots earlier this season. Murray County Central has struggled this season to score points, but they have struggled the most with teams that pressure the basketball. HBC loves to push the tempo and trap the basketball and for the Rebels that would mean a long night.

WWG OUTPLAYS REBEL GIRLS

The MCC Rebel Girls were on the road Monday in Westbrook. The Rebels were blown out by the Chargers just ten days earlier in Slayton, when the Rebels scored just 13 points in the entire game. Monday night would be a different first half for the Rebels but unfortunately, the second half was very similar to the first matchup.

Minnesota families who have owned their farms for 100 years or more are invited to apply for the 2023 Century Farm Program. Produced by the Minnesota State Fair in conjunction with the Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation, the Century Farm Program was created to promote agriculture and honor historic family farms in the state. More than 11,000 Minnesota farms have been honored since the program began in 1976.

This program aims to help smaller communities preserve their existing homes as safe, healthy, and affordable options for future generations.

REGISTER NOW FOR SLAYTON WINTER CROPS DAY & SMALL GRAINS PROGRAM IN SLAYTON, MN

The University of Minnesota Extension Slayton Winter Crops Day and Small Grains Program will be held in person on Thursday, February 23, 2023 at the 4-H Building in Slayton. Registration will begin at 8:30 am, with the program running from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Whether you farm or work with farmers, this program is a great opportunity to hear the latest University-based research and information about corn, soybean, and small grain production issues and management strategies. The morning’s Winter Crops Day program will focus on corn and soybean management topics pertinent to our area. The Southern Small Grain Workshop will follow in the afternoon, where topics will address successful small grain management.

MURRAY COUNTY MEDICAL CENTER SCHEDULES COMMUNITY BLOOD DRIVE FEBRUARY 1ST

Slayton, MN – Murray County Medical Center and Community Blood Bank will hold a community blood drive on Wednesday, February 1 between 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Murray County Medical Center. The need is high and residents are asked to consider donating blood to support the local blood supply. Donors can schedule their donation by logging onto cbblifeblood.org, selecting “events”, and February 1, Murray County Medical Center or calling 507-836-1286, walk-ins are welcome. All who donate receive a Subway gift certificate as a thank you.
