YOUTH LEARN HOW TO DESIGN A STRUCTURE TO OUTLAST AN EARTHQUAKE THROUGH THE MURRAY COUNTY 4-H AFTER SCHOOL ADVENTURES PROGRAM
The Murray County 4-H Program hosted two After School Adventure workshops in the Fulda and Murray County Central School Districts on how to design a structure to outlast an earthquake!
The first workshop was held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, October 8 at the Murray County 4-H Building, 3048 Broadway Ave., Slayton, MN 56172. The second was at 3 p.m., Thursday, October 10 at Fulda Elementary School 303 N Lafayette Ave, Fulda, MN 56131. There is a $5 charge to attend one of these workshops. Both events concluded at 5 p.m. and included a small snack to help youth stay focused and energetic for the activity!
Youth were given various supplies to help build structures that they felt would withstand an earthquake movement. How Kim Hause, Murray County Extension, youth development educator, tested these structures was by placing them in a bowl of Jello and shaking it back and forth to see if it would withstand. Youth then teamed up to build the structure on a “shaker table” that was featured in the Minnesota 4-H State Fair Building this year at the Minnesota State Fair.
