On Thursday, January 19th the Fulda/Murray County Central Warriors made the long road trip on icy roads to Canby, MN, where they would compete in a Quadrangular against Canby, Wabasso, and BOLD. Canby would be the first dual of the night and would prove to be too much for the Warriors, scoring 65 team point to the Warriors 6. Wrestlers Owen Olsem and Carson Klein were the two wrestlers who would end up scoring 6 team points on two decision matches.

After 4 consecutive pins by Canby, Denver Ash held Blake Giese to a decision, followed by Aiden Lorenzen holding Lane Fink to a Technical Fall. After Quintin Lewis took a fall at 145, Owen Olsem took to the mat at the 152 bout and performed well against Mason Smith.

Owen Olsem, coming back from knee injury with a strong upper body, as he never left the chores and weight room alone, is fitting right in where he left off. After giving up an early takedown by Smith, Olsem went to work on a reversal sitting out and turning in to reach the inside knee of Smith picking it up and pushing Smith to the mat. The second period, Olsem starting on bottom sat out again scoring a reversal of which Smith would escape and the wrestlers finished the period neutral. The third period Olsem started on top and stayed on top, looking for a turn finishing the match 6-3 with 3 team points for the Warriors.

Carson Lewis wrestled very well against Sawyer Verhelst only giving up a takedown in the first period. Then starting on bottom in the second period, Verhelst earned a reversal. In the third period, Lewis starting neutral, gave up a takedown and Verhelst let him up, but this time Lewis had plans of his own, earning a takedown and nearly putting Verhelst to his back. Verhelst worked his way back up and won the match taking Lewis the distance 7-3.

Carson Klein was all offense, scoring 4 points on takedowns and earning a nearfall in the 2nd period winning his match 8-3 against Isaac Guza adding another 3 to the team score. The Lancers proved to be a tough opponent as they took the dual 65 to 6.

Next up was BOLD “Bird Island/ Olivia/Lake Lillian/School District” and the Warriors got it started with Kaston Clarke against Ava Kiecker. Kaston, in the first period, scored on a single leg going out the back door then worked on turning Kiecker catching an arm and a half for the pin. Kaden Landsman followed suit against Trevor Plass. After giving up a takedown in the first period, Landsman earned points on two illegal clasps and earned an escape going into the second period 3-2. Landsman, starting on top earned a nearfall with a butcher and Plass pulling on his pinky finger gave up 4 more penalty points and ended up being disqualified, giving 6 to the Warriors.

At 120, Teague Meyer scored on 4 takedowns and a nearfall in the 1st period, allowing 2 escapes and kept his dominance into the second period pinning Tyler Larson of BOLD with a half nelson. Following Meyer, Torrin Clarke fell to a tough Brayden Kiecker, and Denver Ash won by disqualification as BOLD sent the wrong man to wrestle him.

Aiden Lorenzen was next on the docket and took Tanner Kautz to the mat early with a high crotch and earned a 2 point nearfall with a cradle, of which Kautz was able to break and escape. Lorenzen, fighting again from his feet, took Kautz to the mat again with a blast double leg, catching his head on the way down, holding him in a cradle and held his back to the mat scoring the fall. Quintin Lewis at 145, kept the scoring going, taking Trey Zamarron down with a perfect single leg, then twisting him up in a nearside cradle on the edge of the mat for the fall.

After Noah Mathiowetz fell to a very good Austin Kiecker, Owen Olsem fired back with a reversal after being taken down. Olsem sitting out from bottom position, took advantage of Max Benson’s arm and got the half in rolling out on top and skunking it for the pin.

Luke Iverson, at 170, after being taken down and giving up 3 nearfall points, worked up to his base and earned an escape with some excellent flexibility. Defending a throw attempt at the end of the period, Iverson with a big deficit, started the second period on top and with many attempts couldn’t get Elijah Swenson turned and eventually gave up an escape on the edge of the mat. Starting again, in neutral position, Iverson wasted no time scoring again on a single leg and rode hard trying to turn Swenson to his back. Iverson, through the whole 3rd period, was on top and held his position, but just couldn’t score on Swenson ending the match with a decision loss.

At 152, Carson Klein, after a scoreless 1st period started on the bottom in the second, earning his escape, but fell to a headlock by Stevie McMath. The Warriors, open at 195, giving up six team points, scored another 12 points by forfeit to Kolby Kesteloot and Rylan Klein, ending the dual with a 54-27 victory.

The Wabasso Rabbits would be the final dual of the night and after Kaston Clarke fell to Kaysen Harms, Kaden Landsman, in the first period, scored on a great outside single leg, worked Harms to an outside cradle and then scooped the head and pushed his arm out to press his back to the mat, scoring the pin for the Warriors.

Teague Meyer, at 120, scored the initial takedown on Mikale Goblirsch with a good whizzer, then going back on him. Meyer started on top in the 2nd period and Goblirsch scored first with a reversal but Meyer fired back with a reversal of his own. The third period was much the same except Goblirsch held Meyer down after his reversal and scored the pin.

After Torrin Clarke fell to a pin in the second period by Ashton Weidemann, Denver Ash took the stage and scored the initial takedown with an outside single and rode out Weidemann for the remainder of the period. In the second period Ash turned it up earning an escape and 3 takedowns going into the third period with a 9-2 lead. Ash kept the pressure on, scoring two nearfalls on two moves, as well as, two blast double leg takedowns, finishing the match 17-4.

At 138, Aiden Lorenzen used Gavin Marotzke’s whizzer against him and put him to the mat to score the 1st takedown. After an escape by Marotzke, Lorenzen took him for another 2 points with a high crotch, then spinning behind him. The second period ended with a single leading to a double, then a solid butcher for the pin making the team score 16-18 Wabasso.

Quintin Lewis had the match of the night, going against Adryen Tietz, the star footballer for the Rabbits, and put on a show. Scoring on an outside single and a nearfall on a cradle Tietz reversed and put Lewis in a cradle of his own. Lewis, fighting through the cradle, broke the hands and pushed Tietz over and held him in a reverse half for a 3 point nearfall. Lewis, starting on bottom in the 2nd period, stood right up and broke Tietz’s hands apart for the escape then scored a takedown out of the scramble and worked up to a devastating leg cradle nearly pinning Tietz as time ran out. The third period, Lewis, on top, worked an armbar and spun over Tietz, putting him on his back for the pin.

Noah Mathiowetz at 152 drew Preston Remiger of the Rabbits and after some hand fighting, scored his takedown with a head in the hole. Immediately, Mathiowetz got the knuckleroll half and put another 6 on the board for the Warriors.

The final match of the night would be Owen Olsem as he man-handled Mason Kampsen for three periods. In the first, Olsem scored on a single leg two times, lifting it over his head for the takedown. The 2nd period, Olsem got the initial takedown of which Kampsen would reverse and put Olsem on his back for a 2 point nearfall. Olsem held on and worked out of Kampsen’s pinning combination with an escape and scored a reversal out of the scramble with a nearside cradle, winning the match 13-8 putting the Warriors ahead 31-18. With open weights to finish out the dual the Warriors took it 49-30.

On Saturday the FMCC Warriors traveled to Mora, MN for the 7-9th grade MNGWL State tournament and performed very well, winning the runnerup of the consolation bracket. After a very close loss to Pierz 39-30 the Warriors went on to defeat Owatonna 67-9. Then against DGF (Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton), the Warriors won 39-25. Apple Valley was the 4th dual of the day and the Warriors did not disappoint, going 4524 coming out on top.
