Murray County Attorney Travis Smith was awarded the MCAA Award of Excellence at the Minnesota County Attorneys Association’s Annual Meeting on December 3, 2025. This award honors an individual who has engaged in activities that show a high level of dedication, professionalism, and commitment to public service and the public practice of law by demonstrating extraordinary leadership, initiative, or innovation in the performance of their duties.

Smith has served as Murray County Attorney since 2015, but that role represents just a fraction of the impact he has made on the legal community in Minnesota. His commitment to perfecting the practice of law is undeniable. He possesses a vast and evolving knowledge of appellate law—an area in which he has become a statewide expert.

“When Judge Small called to tell me that I was going to receive the Award of Excellence, I was surprised,” Smith said. “Over the years, I have watched as some of the most distinguished prosecutors in the state have received this award. To say that I am humbled to be included in their company would be vast understatement.

According to the MCAA, Smith assists countless offices with their appeals.

“He’s a phone call away and can provide direction in almost an instant. He has a rare combination of deep legal understanding and the ability to communicate complex concepts with clarity and precision, the MCCA release states. “His skill in issue-spotting is instinctual. He can quickly identify the crux of a legal problem and craft persuasive, creative arguments with efficiency and excellence. The impact of his appellate work on behalf of county attorneys is significant. Beyond his own county, he regularly assists other offices in need, often appearing in multiple courtrooms across various counties and at the Court of Appeals within the same week.”

The MCAA stated Smith exemplifies the qualities they seek in County Attorneys.

“He’s fair, makes the tough decisions with integrity, and has a deep respect for the rule of law. Beyond his legal acumen, he’s a trusted colleague, a generous mentor, and a steadfast supporter. For his many years of dedicated service, he is deserving of recognition and celebration.”

Smith said he has dedicated his career to MCAA’s mission of improving the quality of the justice system.

“I am grateful for this recognition of my work by my peers.,” he added.
