The Trail’s Edge General Store and Cafe opens for the season on Thursday, April 21st. Located just north of Currie on State Park Road, the long-time favorite spot for camping supplies and great meals will be ready to meet your needs from spring through the harvest season.
New owners Andrea “DeDe” Kelly and Pete Jaros purchased Trail’s Edge in June 2021. Both DeDe and Pete are retired law enforcement officers from Sioux Falls. “In August 2020 we purchased a home on Bloody Lake,” explained DeDe. “We retired young but weren’t ready to stop working.” DeDe commented that when they jumped into the work last June everyone was helpful and welcoming. “Trail’s Edge is so important to so many people and maybe they were scared it would shut down. We had a really great summer.” The couple lives year round at the lake and admits they do work long hours but they appreciate their free time in the winter months. This is the first year they have opened the store themselves but they report it is all going well and they will be ready. Pete said, “Deanna still does most of the cooking and I fill in. But we’ll have Deanna’s salads all season!” The cafe will have a breakfast, lunch and supper menu as well as homemade specials like casseroles, soup and sandwiches. DeDe said, “The specials will be something home cooked that is not on the menu.” Pete explained the store has a little bit of everything that campers may need. “We have pop, firewood, propane, milk and eggs. We also sell bait and on/off sale beer and liquor.”
DeDe and Pete will open the store and cafe on Wednesdays from 4-8pm and Thursdays - Sundays 8am-8pm. The kitchen will close one half hour before closing time and they will be open on Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day. They accept cash, personal checks and credit cards and gift certificates are available for purchase. DeDe stated most of the previous staff are returning and everyone is looking forward to a good season. Pete added that they are proud to be part of the Trail’s Edge history and would love to display photos of years past. If anyone has a photo from their family archives, bring it down and tell your story! Pete, DeDe and Trail’s Edge are part of the Currie family and everyone is welcome!.
