The Rebel track and field teams traveled to Pipestone for the 3A Sub-Section South track meet. Other teams that were included in the meet were; Luverne, Southwest Minnesota Christian/Edgerton, Pipestone Area, Hills-Beaver Creek, Russell-Tyler-Ruthon, Tracy-Milroy-Balaton and Adrian/Ellsworth. The top four finishers in each event would automatically qualify for the section meet while the next top four performances out of all of the sub sections would also qualify as a wildcard.
On the boys side, senior hurdler Ashton Kalas will be competing in three events at the section meet. Kalas placed 3rd in the 110 hurdles and 5th in 300 hurdles while also being the lead off leg in the 4x100 relay (4th place). Other relay members include Carson Engelkes, Dylan Doeden and Thomas Huso. Doeden placed 3rd in the discus to earn himself a trip to sections. Eighth grader Alex Betz ran a personal best time of 2:14 in the 800 to place 7th. That performance earned him a wildcard spot at the section meet. Betz was also a member of the 4x800 relay that advanced on through the wildcard. Other members on that relay include Beckett Stelter, Wesley Hause and Walker Biren. This is a great opportunity and experience for this group as Betz, Stelter and Hause are all eighth graders while Biren is just a freshman.
Other notable boy performances that just missed out on advancing to sections include: Thomas Huso (9th - 100m), Wesley Hause (7th - 3200), Wyatt Biren (8th - 3200), and Caleb Rosenbrook (6th - Pole Vault).
Twin sisters Ashley and Amanda Overgaauw, competing in their final high school season, each advanced in two individual events and one relay. Ashley was a double winner in the 800 (2:24) and the 1600 (5:23.1). Amanda was runner up in the 1600 with a time of 5:23.2 and champion in the 3200 (11:30). Seventh grader Holland Vogel placed 6th in the 3200 but will be advancing to sections through the wildcard performance. Sophia Nelson and Megan Bakke placed 2nd and 3rd behind Ashley in the 800 to give MCC a 1-2-3 finish. Brylei Schreier was the sub section champion in the 400 with a time of 63.3. Hurdlers Brealyn Damm and Lindsey Hause each automatically qualified for the section meet. Damm placed 4th in the 100 hurdles while Hause was 3rd in the 300 hurdles. Damm also placed 3rd in the long jump with a personal best leap of 15’ ¼”. Hause tied for 4th place in the high jump with a height of 4’6”.
The 4x400 relay was a battle between Luverne and MCC with Luverne edging out victory by less than a second. MCC relay members include Brylei Schreier, Sophia Nelson, Amanda Overgaauw and Ashley Overgaauw. The 4x800 relay of Sophia Nelson, Megan Bakke, Lindsey Hause and Lily Daniels were also runners up and qualified for the section meet.
Other girl wildcard performances include the 4x200 relay team of Courtney Gengler, Abby Overman, Suttyn Schryvers and Madilyn Kramer and Callie Platt in the discus. Callie placed 7th with a personal best throw of 89’7”.
The section meet, consisting of 23 teams from southwest Minnesota, will be Thursday, June 1 in Montevideo. The top two finishers in each event, along with those that meet state qualifying standards, will qualify for the State Meet.
