The Slayton Kiwanis Club is a local chapter of Kiwanis International, a service organization that is focused on improving the world, one child and one community at a time. The Slayton Kiwanis Chapter contributes funding to community organizations or projects and children’s initiatives, including: MCC graduate scholarships, Murray County Early Childhood Initiative, Scouts BSA, and more. The group also partners with local organizations to offer programming initiatives, including K-Kids – a partnership between MCC & Slayton Kiwanis for fourth and fifth grade students to learn leadership kills, self-development, character building, and participate in adult-guided service projects. Programming also occurs through presentations at regular club meetings from local speakers on topics of interest. Recent topics have included regional trail planning, an exchange student program, and advance care planning.
The club’s programming is supported by various fundraisers throughout the year, including the annual Pancake Breakfast. This year’s breakfast will be on Sunday, Nov. 12, at St. Ann’s Hall in Slayton, from 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy pancakes, sausage links, orange juice, milk & coffee to support a good cause! The allyou- can-eat event costs $10 each for adults, $4 each for children ages 6 – 12 years old, and children 5 and under eat for free. Tickets are available in advance from Slayton Kiwanis Club members, or payment can be made at the event.
The Slayton Kiwanis Club is always looking for new members interested in improving the local community and benefiting its children. Five new members have been inducted into the club over the last year, including: Jackie Meier, Pastor Chad Duffy, Bryason Korver, Terri Hurd, and Amber Sorenson.
The group currently meets the first and third Wednesday of every month at 12 p.m. at the Plaid Moose in Slayton. Quarterly club dues are $50 per person, and meals are an additional $8 each (which are only charged if the member attends the meeting). Learn more about joining the club through their Facebook page – “Slayton Kiwanis Club,” or call (507) 626-0496 today.
