The Slayton Community Band has had an AMAZING season! They added music for our Memorial Day program at MCC High School, played 6 concerts at Gullord Park in June and July, and have spent the rest of the summer making guest appearances by performing in neighboring towns during parades. You can catch these talented people playing next in the Slayton parade August 17th at 1:00 PM and September 2nd at 1:00 PM in the Tracy Box Car Days parade!
The Slayton Community Band is always open to new members! You can join anytime. If you or someone you know is interested in joining this FUN group, please let our director (Christie Gergen email: christie.gergen@mcc.mntm. org phone: 712-309-1040) or a band member know. According to John Dani, PhD, chair of Neuroscience at Penn’s Perelman School of Medicine, “Playing an instrument may be one of the best ways to help keep the brain healthy. It engages every major part of the central nervous system, tapping into both the right and left sides of the brain.” If you haven’t played in years, we encourage you to try. You would be surprised at what you remember!
After the Slayton Community Band plays in Tracy on September 2nd, they will take about a 6 week break before rehearsals start again to gear up for the Annual Slayton Community Band Christmas Concert. This year we are bringing December in with style. Our Christmas Concert will be Sunday, December 1st at the MCC High School Auditorium. Time TBD. We will have special guests this year joining us for this concert! The Al Opland Singers, based in Pipestone, Minnesota will be sharing our stage and giving you a sneak peek into their concert season. We are going to end the concert doing a sing-a-long with instrumental accompaniment while including singers from the Al Opland, Slayton Community Choir, and students from the MCC choirs!
This is going to be an event you will want to attend. The concert is FREE and open to the public. Food shelf donations will be accepted at the door. (Snow/Ice reschedule date will be Sunday, December 8th.) Let’s support the band and choirs by packing the auditorium! Hope to see you December 1st!
