SLAYTON CITY COUNCIL SETS LEVY, FEE SCHEDULE

The Slayton City Council on Monday certified the levy at 4.96 percent, which was where the preliminary levy was set several months ago. The council also approved the 2026 fee schedule.

In the fee schedule was an increase for the peddlers fee, a special vehicle permit fee and the cost of water outside city limits. The cost of a major fire event went up as did the extrication costs by the fire department. The special halfprice sewer and water rates for churches was removed. Churches will now be paying the same rates as others.

Daily admission and passes for the city’s municipal pool stayed the same, but the fee for pool rental and private and group lessons were bumped slightly.

A fee was set for cannabis retail registration and renewal, as was a temporary cannabis event fee.

Only one quote for the Slayton Public Library and Senior Center heating and colling project was submitted – that was from Slayton Plumbing & Heating for $96,500. The quote was slightly higher than estimated, but was approved by the council.

Slayton Fire Chief Chris LeTendre recommended the hiring of two new firefighters – Nick Coolidge and Alex Keller. Keller is already a certified firefighter. Both new firefighters were approved by the council pending a pre-employment physical. The council also approved a 6-month leave of absence for firefighter Scott Broeckel to accommodate a change in his employment schedule.
