The Murray County Central Volleyball team participated in two tournaments during mid season play.
September 30th found the Rebels in Bertha, MN to participate in the Bertha Hewitt Annual tournament for the first time.
As typical in tournament play, MCC saw three totally unfamiliar teams in pool play. Their first contender was Swanville followed by Bertha-Hewitt and rounded out the morning against the Hancock Owls.
The Rebels split with Swanville, 23-25 and 25-16; and defeated Bertha-Hewitt, 25-20 and 25-13 as well as a win against Hancock, 25-18 and 25-22. MCC finished first in Pool B by points moving on to the Championship Bracket.
The first team to beat for MCC was Pillager and the Rebels took care of business in three sets, 18-25, 25-22 and a tight 3rd game, 16-14. The win put MCC face to face with Parker’s Prairie. The Panthers faced a determined Rebel team in set one, but came out on top, 25-23. The second set found the Rebels struggling a little more before falling, 16-25, claiming the Runner Up hardware in their first tournament appearance.
Tournament leaders Abby Loosbrock: 11 Ace serves, 27 Kills, 12 Blocks; Kelli Miller, 5 Aces serves, 22 Set assists; Kate Slettum: 30 Kills, 49 Set assists, 24 Digs; Atalie Rosenbrook added 26 Kills and Emmi Peltola contributed 38 Digs.
REBELS FINISH 2ND IN THE WHITE BRACKET AT JIMMY JOHNS TOURNAMENT A two day event found the lady Rebel volleyball team in Marshall October 6th and 7th as an annual participant in the Jimmy Johns Classic.
Pool play for the Rebels began Friday evening as they faced the Cleveland Clippers, followed by the Windom Eagles. The Rebels fell to both the Clippers (21-25, 19-25) and the Eagles (15-25, 18-25), landing themselves in the White Division on Saturday.
The first round on Saturday saw MCC facing Yellow Medicine East. The Sting pushed MCC to three sets, but the Rebels prevailed, 25-9, 19-25 and 15-13.
MCC continued winning and in round two took down the Thunderbirds from GFW, 27-25 and 25-18.
Standing in MCC’s way as champions of the bracket was the KMS Saints from Kerkhoven. The Rebels found three hard sets, but had to settle for runner up by scores 25-23, 1625 and 10-15.
The Rebels combined for 24 Ace serves (Loosbrock – 8, Miller – 6, Blankenship – 5), 54 Kills (Slettum – 13, Loosbrock – 11, Schneider - 10, Rosenbrook – 10), 11 Digs (Peltola – 27, Slettum – 26), 8 Blocks (Loosbrook – 4) and 53 Set assists (Slettum – 28, Miller 25).
