The MCC Rebels were on the road Monday night to start a busy week on the hardcourt. The Rebels would play three games in five days playing in Cottonwood Monday against the Lakeview Lakers and then will follow with games in Slayton against Red Rock Central and Mountain Lake Area Comfrey. The Rebels week got off to a rough start on Monday.
The Rebels and the Lakers are known more for their defense than their offense and that was evident on Monday night. The two teams forced each other into 20+ turnovers and neither team shot the ball well as open shots were not available on a regular basis. The problem both teams have is they do struggle on the offensive end. Good defense against struggling offense and you get a low scoring contest. The Rebels jumped out to a good start taking an 11-2 lead in the first five minutes. The lead didn’t last long, as the Lakers would go on a 19-0 run to claim a 21-11 lead. The Rebels finished the half with a couple of key baskets to make the halftime score 23 to 17.
In the second half, MCC cut the deficit to four points after a couple of early baskets. The Lakers would respond by extending their lead back to double figures but it wasn’t smooth or pretty. The Lakers only scored 20 points in the second half and Brook Gunlogson scored 9 of her team’s 20 points. With the Rebels holding the Lakers to 20 points, they had a chance to get in the game, but MCC only scored 16 points in the second half. Jayda Hellewell and Thea Schneider scored five points each in the second half but the rest of the Rebels only scored six points. The Lakers would get the win 43 to 33.
The Rebels didn’t have a player that scored in double figures. Thea Schneider led the Rebels with 9 points, fouling out late in the second half. Ava Deacon scored 8 for the Rebels, most coming in the first half. Lakeview was led by a pair of backups. Brook Gunlogson and Anah Schmidt didn’t start the game for the Lakers but they would finish with 12 and 11 points respectively. The loss dropped the Rebels to 5-7 on the season with a key game against RRC coming up on Tuesday.
