The Murray County Central Softball team opened their season this past week with a pair of games on Thursday and Friday. The Rebels opened the regular season on Thursday with a Red Rock Conference game at Okabena against Heron Lake Okabena Fulda. The Rebels followed it up with a non conference game in Wabasso. The Rebels have practiced for four weeks, mostly indoors, with three practices outside, just one coming on a softball field and the other two in parking lots. Like every team in the area this spring, the first few games will be getting acclimated to playing outside.

The Rebels opened the season at Okabena against the Coyotes and MCC tookcontrol of the game early on. MCC scored first when Abby Loosbrock walked and then came around to score on a Thea Schneider double to left field. MCC added three runs each in the second and third innings. MCC was able to take advantage of walks and errors by the Coyotes and turn them into runs. Mary Lou McNab plated two runs in the second inning and Elyse Paulzine drove in another run in the third. The Rebels led 8 to nothing heading to the 7th inning, 8 more runs to go ahead 16-0. In the Rebels 8-run 7th inning, they only had one hit.

Thea Schneider and the Rebels defense shutout the Coyotes. Schneider was terrific in the circle walking one hitter and allowing just 2 hits. The Rebels defense did commit a pair of errors in the game, but the Coyotes never put a runner as far as third base. Schneider struck out 8 batters in the seven innings. Mary Lou McNab and Elyse Paulzine made several nice plays in the field to preserve the shutout. MCC would win 16-0.

Elyse Paulzine and Mary Lou McNab led the Rebels with 3 runs batted in each. Thea Schneider led the team with two hits, including a double. Zoey Iverson and Jayda Hellewell each scored three runs in the contest. The Rebels would get to savor the win for just a few hours before they traveled to Wabasso on Friday for a big sectional game against a very competitive team.
