Round two for the #7 seed MCC Rebels found them face to face with the #2 seed Tracy- Milroy-Balaton Panthers in volleyball action. Coming off a dominating win over the Patriots in first round action the Rebels were excited for the next contest. MCC was determined not to fall into the same old routine against challenging teams and a late run in set one saw the Rebels throwing up some solid blocks and quick set kills, but it just wasn’t enough to close the gap as they fell 14-25. In the second set, MCC picked up where they left off as the Panthers traded points and errors with the Rebels in the second set. Senior setter Casey Miller connected with Atalie Rosenbrook, Abby Loosbrock and Kate Slettum to make the game interesting, but TMB found a way to exploit the Rebels defense with short, well placed tips, taking the second set, 21-25.
Determined to go down fighting, the Rebels kept swinging away at the Panthers behind Rosenbrook, Slettum and Morgan Winter. MCC took the lead momentarily from the host team, seemingly in control of the third set. TMB recovered the lead off of a couple timely Rebel errors, but that didn’t deter the visitors. MCC fought back from five points down to bring the set within two before TMB called for a time out, 2220, in an effort to contain Loosbrock. The Panthers proved to be the better team all around, finishing the match, 25-22, but coach Katie Furth was proud of her team’s progress, “It was an exciting game, we made them earn it and I’m looking forward to the next season.”
