The Lakeview Lakers came to town Tuesday night for a non-conference tilt, featuring the North Sub-Section foe.
MCC kicked the game off with the first bucket when Bryce Hoekman grabbed an offensive rebound and put back. It wouldn’t take long for Lakeview to answer back, as they would hit a three to go up 3-2. The defense was solid as it forced a deep top of the key three, but nonetheless, it was drilled.
MCC forced a stop on the next possession and fed Hoekman in the post again from the block, where he used a power dribble, absorbed the contact, created space, and laid it in off the glass.
The Rebels earned another stop and then found Carter Lewis on the baseline out of bounds play. This would just be the start of Carter’s big night, as he would end up with a game high 21 points to go along with 7 rebounds and 3 steals.
MCC was up 6-3 but would let Lakeview’s best shooter find a rhythm, three pointer from the left wing and just like that it was 6-6.
Lewis force the second of his three jump balls on the next possession, which would keep the possession in the Rebels hands. That led to an Aidan Dierks three from the right wing. Lewis forced his third jump ball on the ensuing defensive possession. This would lead to a turnover for the Lakers.
With the score 9-6, neither team scored for about a minute before the Lakers hit yet anoth-er 3. Might be time to get out of the zone for the Rebels.
MCC then went on a 23-6 run over the next several minutes with a balanced scoring attack, and a 37-17 run to end the half, as 6 Rebels would score at least 2 points in the half, with Hoekman netting 8, Dierks 11, and Lewis 16. MCC went into the half up 46-26 off of a 10 foot runner by Dierks with under 5 seconds to go.
The second half would continue much like the first. MCC got off to a fast start on offense and tightened up its play even more on defense, only allowing 16 second half points.
On the Rebels first possession, a post entry pass to Hoekman on the left lane line, got kicked out to Aidan Dierks for the cross court three. A beautiful read by Hoekman, as the double team came and the pass was spot on, right into Dierks shooting pocket. Seniors Bryce Hoekman, Ross Englekes, Aidan Dierks, and Carter Lewis got the Rebels off to a 20-2 run to start the half. Just like that, it was 66-28 with 13 minutes left to play.
Neither team scored for the next couple minutes before Hudson Schryvers hit a smooth jump hook in the lane. Gavin Gillette earned a block shot, gathered the ball, and went coast to coast for the and-1. He would convert on the free throw, pushing the Rebels up to 71-28 with 10:42 left.
When the dust settled, the Rebels earned an 81-42 victory. MCC will be taking a 3 game winning streak into a Red Rock Conference rematch with WWG, Thursday. MCC was able to get the best of the Chargers in the first game, but these are always battles.
