The MCC Rebel Girls Basketball team was on the road Thursday night to take on the Adrian Ellsworth Dragons. The game was held in Ellsworth, where the Rebels have played the Dragons in the last several years. The Rebels were hoping to get a win and pull their record to 5-5 on the season. The Dragons were not going to let that happen easily and their defense set the tone.

The MCC Rebels are not a very big team, with a pair of players 5’10”. What has been a bit surprising is, the Rebels have been bigger than several of their opponents this season. The Dragons of Adrian Ellsworth have good length and they used it well against the Rebels, as the Dragons defense caused the Rebels to miss shot after shot and they also turned it over at a much higher rate than they have over the last several weeks. MCC scored just 8 points in the first half as the Rebels couldn’t get the ball through the zone defense. Adrian Ellsworth led after eighteen minutes 21 to 8.

The second half was played faster than the first half as both teams were more comfortable on offense. The Rebels did some switching of the lineup which helped against the zone defense but even though the Rebels didn’t turn the ball over as much in the second half and they scored more, they also gave up more points as the Dragons got into a better rhythm. Adrian Ellsworth scored 21 points in the first half but would score 33 points in the second half. The Dragons cruised to the win 54 to 32.

MCC turned the ball over 27 times and shot just 18% from the field. The Dragons turned the ball over 16 times but shot 35%. What was interesting was, the Rebels outrebounded the Dragons but it didn’t matter because of the poor Rebel shooting. Kelli Miller led the Rebels with 8 points, Jayda Hellewell scored 7 and grabbed 8 rebounds, and Abby Overman had 6 points and 5 rebounds in the losing effort. The Dragons were led by three players scoring in double figures led by Katelyn Frodermann who scored 12. The Rebels play host to WWG on Monday night.
