The MCC Rebels Girls Basketball Team played their third game of the season on Tuesday night and their first Red Rock Conference game. The Rebels played in Lamberton at Red Rock Central’s new gymnasium and the girls put together a dominating performance. It wasn’t all pretty for the Rebels, but in the end, they dominated where it counts... on the scoreboard.
The Rebels defense was rock solid in the first half as Red Rock Central scored just nine first half points. Paige Wondercheck led the Falcons with 4 points but the rest of the team scored just five. The Rebels forced the Falcons into 24 first half turnovers. MCC did a terrific job of controlling the tempo, as they turned the ball over just 8 times. MCC struggled shooting in the first half, but they had plenty of shots. MCC shot 13 free throws in the first half, but only made 4. On the other hand, the Rebels were able to make 3 three-point shots in the first half, as they led at the half 21 to 9.
The Rebels offense came together in the second half, led by Ava Deacon who scored five early points. The Rebels scored the first fifteen points of the second half. Thea Schneider scored five for the Rebels and Kelli Miller did the same. MCC’s defense was just as strong in the second half, allowing just six points. The Rebels pulled ahead to start the running clock in the final five minutes. Erynn Rohrer and and Joelle Hellewell each scored their first varsity points in the final few minutes. The Rebels won the game 57 to 15.
The Rebels turned the ball over just 15 times in the game while the Falcons gave it up 40 times. The large number of turnovers by the Falcons led to the Rebels getting 81 shots. The Rebels took 21 free throws, in the game while the Falcons didn’t get 7. The Rebels were led by Ava Deacon with 12 points. Kelli Miller finished with 8 points, while Suttyn Schryvers and Kate Blankenship scored 7 points each. The top 2 Rebel rebounders were Suttyn Schryvers with 8 and Calleigh Doeden with 7. The Rebels will return to action next week after getting a couple days off for Thanksgiving.
