Lakeview 65 - MCC 48
The MCC Rebel Girls were back in action on Friday night, one day after losing to the HBC Patriots. The Rebels played host to one of the top teams in the Section 3A North and Camden Conference, Lakeview Lakers. The Lakers were 7-2 entering Friday nights matchup with the Rebels, with their 2 losses coming to Minneota and Canby earlier this season. The Lakers were in the middle of a four game winning streak and were looking to extend it against the Rebels. MCC was looking to bounce back after losing to Hills Beaver Creek.
The Rebels came out strong against the long and athletic Lakers putting together one of their best halves of the season. The Rebels scored 35 points in the first half, scoring from the outside but also getting some opportunities inside against the taller Lakers. For the Rebels, Ava Deacon, Kelli Miller, and Kat Miller led the team in scoring. In fact, they also did almost all the scoring for the Rebels in this game. MCC usually had seven or eight players scoring but against the Lakers the Rebels had three hot hands and the rest of the team struggled. MCC led at the half 35 to 27.
The second half of the game would turn quickly. The Rebels struggled to score in the final eighteen minutes. Brynn Stensrud got hot from the field scoring 30 points against the Rebels to lead her team back from behind. After 35 points in the first half the Rebels managed just 13 the entire second half while the Lakers scored 38. The Rebels just didn’t have an answer for the Lakers who didn’t shoot all that well, just 32% from the field but they grabbed 19 offensive rebounds. The Rebels took 45 shots inside the three point line in the game. They made just 9 and that would be the difference. The Lakers increased their win streak to 5 games with a 65 to 48 win.
The Rebels got outrebounded 40 to 23, which was the biggest difference maker in the game. For MCC shooting has been an issue this season. On Friday, the Rebels made 8 of 18 three point shots which is really good, so it is strange in the same game they would make just 9 of 45 shots inside the three point line. The Rebels didn’t help themselves by shooting under 50% from the free throw line. The Rebels scoring was led by Kelli Miller with 14, Ava Deacon with 13, and Kat Miller with 11. The Rebels top 3 scorers made 12 of the teams shots from the field the rest of the roster made 5. Brynn Stensrud was terrific for the Lakers scoring 30 points while Brook Gunlogson scored 11. The Rebels will be back at home Tuesday night against MLAC.
