MCC 48 HLOF 42

The MCC Rebel Girls played host to the Coyotes of Heron Lake Okabena Fulda on Friday night. The Rebels and the Coyotes began their seasons in the same place at the Wabasso Tip Off Classic where the Coyotes won two games, beating Wabasso and GFW. The Rebels lost both of their games to GFW and MACCRAY. Since those games were played, MCC has three wins and three losses, while the Coyotes have had one win and five losses. With the same record coming into Friday’s game, one would expect a close game, but the Rebels were missing two of their regulars, making for a pretty short bench for the team. The Rebels would find a way to win anyway.

The first half was a stalemate as the two teams mirrored each other over 18 minutes. The Rebels had 13 turnovers and the Coyotes had 12. Both teams struggled from the free throw line, as MCC made only two and the Coyotes didn’t make any. Kate Blankenship had a great half for the Rebels, scoring 8 points. Ava Deacon scored just four points as the second leading scorer. HLOF was led by Tori Reynolds, Renae Salentiny, and Ashton Reierson, who each scored 5. The game was tied at the half 21-21.

Earlier in the week, the Rebels went into Tracy and picked up a win in a game where Thea Schneider and Kat Miller dominated in the second half. The same thing would happen on Friday night as the forward duo for the MCC combined to score 18 points, with Schneider scoring 10 and Miller 8. The Rebels defense held the Coyotes to just 21 second half points. Kate Blankenship would make 4 key free throws, as the Rebels held on for a 48 to 42 victory.

The Rebels won this game, but the stats told the story of how close the game was. HLOF outshot the Rebels .249% to .242% as the Coyotes made 16 shots from the field and MCC made 15. Both teams made 5 three point shots MCC shot 20 times from beyond the arc and the Coyotes shot 19. The Coyotes had 20 turnovers and the Rebels 19. The biggest difference in the game was MCC made 13 free throws and the HLOF made just 5. The Rebels had three players score in double figures with Schneider scoring 13, Kate Blankenship 12, and Kat Miller 11. The Coyotes had two players in double figures with Lauryn Hendel scoring 11 and Ashton Reierson scoring 10. The Rebels next game won’t be until January 2nd at Hill Beaver Creek. MCC is now 4-5 on the season, with the Coyotes 3-6.
