Lake Shetek State Park will be hosting programs that highlight Lake Shetek history along with a stargazing presentation by WCCO’s Mike Lynch.
On Friday, August 18 at 8:00 pm at the Oak Woods Campground Amphitheater, join us for a “Visitor from the Past”. Mrs. Lavina Eastlick, one of the settlers at Lake Shetek, will tell us about her experiences during and after the conflict that took place here in August of 1862 that changed the lives of all involved forever.
On Saturday, August 19, join us for a bus tour journey back in time to August 20, 1862 and be guided through the events that took place here on that fateful day. We will talk about the lives of the early settlers and Dakota people before the conflict while touring to the significant sites located around Lake Shetek and end with how their lives were changed forever. The bus will leave the picnic area parking lot at Lake Shetek State Park promptly at 9:00 am with the tour ending approximately at 12:30 pm. The cost of the tour is $5.00 per person and reservations are required due to limited seating. Please either call the park at (507) 763-3256 with the number of people attending or stop in at the park office to sign up.
Also on Saturday evening, Mike Lynch, former meteorologist from WCCO radio, will present a night of stargazing at Lake Shetek State Park. He will bring his large telescopes for visitors to look through to see the wonders of the night sky including Saturn and Jupiter. He will show us some of the constellations and share the stories from Greek and Roman mythology. The program will be held, starting at 8:30 pm, at the East Picnic Shelter in the Sunrise Campground at the state park. There is some seating available but visitors are encouraged to bring their own chairs. The program is free and sponsored by the Friends of Lake Shetek State Park.
