PIPESTONE FOOD PRESERVATION CLASS IN JULY
Do you have a high producing garden, or enjoy purchasing produce from our local growers at the farmers markets? Maybe you have been wondering how to preserve and enjoy fresh garden produce into the fall and winter months, or maybe how to do the prep work now to be able to enjoy stews, sauces, jams, and so much more all throughout the year? Whether you are an avid gardener, have no garden, are completely new to food preservation, or just want a refresher on food preservation basics and current safety practices, you will want to join us for one of two upcoming Food Preservation Classes. Two classes will be held in Pipestone on Thursday, July 20, 2023 at St. Leo Catholic Church Gym starting at 1:30 p.m. or 5:30 p.m.
Claudia Botzet and Whitney Keller-Reetz, SDSU Extension Nutrition Field Specialists, will be coming to Pipestone to share their expertise on the science and art of preserving food. Claudia and Whitney will show attendees how to add value to extra produce and how to safely preserve food that will last families throughout the winter. In this free food preservation class, the instructors will cover the basics on why we want to preserve food, how it works, safety measures to take, startup costs, and which preservation methods and recipes are safe to use. In addition, attendees will learn about the different methods and equipment needed to preserve food: canning, pickling, fermenting, freezing, jelly making & dehydrating.
The Pipestone/Murray County University of Minnesota Extension program will be hosting this workshop in partnership with the Pipestone Master Gardeners. Snacks, refreshments, and information handouts will be provided, so please RSVP at z.umn.edu/Pipestonefoodpres so we know how many to plan for at each session. All ages and levels of garden experience are welcome to attend.
Both workshops will be held at the St. Leo Catholic Church gym. The address is 415 S Hiawatha Ave, Pipestone, MN 56164.
