MURRAY COUNTY 4-H “GREAT WAFFLE CHALLENGE

Murray County 4-H’s summer programming for area youth recently held “The Great Waffle Challenge”, in which youth were given the task of creating a waffle out of different ingredients and opening their view of what a waffle could be.

The class was held on Monday, June 15th, at the Murray County 4-H Building. This event started off with a brief introduction to waffles, their history, and some interesting facts about waffles and waffle-related topics. Then, the 20 youth, aged 5-12, were split into groups and explored various waffle recipes that utilized ingredients like cocoa powder, different binding agents like eggs or applesauce, and even potatoes and cheese.

The youth were able to create and try many different waffles and top them with an array of different fruits, drizzles, whipped cream, candies, and savory options for the potato waffles.

Youth were challenged to create different recipes and add-ins to make something unique from the plain waffles they came in knowing and learned nutritional and baking skills as well. Youth left with a yummy waffle (or two) and newfound knowledge of food and nutrition.
