On February 2nd, Murray County Central elementary students were treated to programs by special guest Laura Purdie Salas. Ms. Salas is a professional author from St. Paul who has published 135 books (and counting!) over her twenty-seven year career. She states, “ I’m primarily a kids’ writer who loves to write poetry, nonfiction, and picture book fiction. I write for kids because books were the air that I breathed when I was a kid. They were my world, my escape. This may sound sappy, but no matter what my topic or market, I love contributing to the safe world of books that I believe all kids need.”
Ms. Salas began her day at West Elementary with a program for fourth, fifth and sixth graders, followed by a program for the second and third graders and ended her day at Central with the kindergarten and first grades. All three programs were slightly different as she prepared well for the needs of each grade level. All of the students were treated to examples of equation poetry from her book, “Snowman-Cold=Puddle” and given the opportunity to create their own equation poems. The older students also heard Ms. Salas read from her new books, “Finding Family” and “Zap! Clap! Boom!”. She shared a brief introduction of herself using the elements of poetry and ended her time with information about the process of printing picture books. Laura brought her creative and energetic spirit to MCC and asked all of us to repeatedly say out loud “I Am A Writer” and “I Am A Reader”. It was an inspiring day of science, poetry and fun!
