The MCC Rebel Girls Basketball team looked to put together a winning streak for the first time this season when they played host to the WWG Chargers on Friday night. The Rebels beat MLAC on Tuesday night and MCC was hoping the momentum of a win over MLAC would lead to a great second game of the week against a team MLAC beat earlier this season. That unfortunately didn’t happen for the Rebels.
The WWG Chargers are a strong basketball team that doesn’t have a single senior on the roster. They also do not have a lot of size on their roster, with only two players over 5’9” and one of those is a freshman. Yet, the Chargers are an aggressive team both on offense and defense. The Chargers showed that aggressiveness on Friday. The Chargers were in control of this game throughout. Addeson Jenniges got off to a great start leading the Chargers with eight points in the first half which equaled the Rebels’ entire team. MCC turned the ball over 12 times in the first half and only created 2. MCC trailed at the half 26 to 8. Things wouldn’t get better in a fast-moving second half. Amelia Sikel scored 10 points in the second half while the Rebels as a team scored 5. The Chargers’ top two scorers outscored the Rebels by 10 points. The Chargers would get the win 52 to 13.
The Rebels Jayda Hellewell led the Rebels in scoring with 4 points. She is the only Rebel to make more than one basket, as she hit a three-point shot in the first half and a free throw in the second. Sikel would finish the game with 15 points. MCC turned the ball over 21 times in the game but only forced 8. The Rebels will be busy with games against HLOF, Adrian Ellsworth, and HBC over the next week.
