MCC K-Kids is a youth-based community service organization that is open to all 5th and 6th grade students here at MCC. We are sponsored by the Slayton Kiwanis Club. We had a wonderful group of 19 students this year who participated with big hearts and lots of enthusiasm!
K-Kids helped the Slayton Kiwanis with their Pancake Breakfast last fall, as well as the Soup and Dessert lunch this spring. They also held a gift collection for the Murray County Christmas Project at Christmas time. The group was also excited to receive K-Kids t-shirts in December at their Christmas party!
In February, the group made Staff Appreciation Valentines for our MCC staff, as well has inviting students to participate in Dollar Day to celebrate Heart Month. MCC students brought in $638 during Dollar Day! Donations were given to the family of Molly Einck, who made fleece tie blankets in her memory to donate to the children’s hospital.
In March, the K-Kids decorated magnets with positive messages. These magnets were placed on lockers throughout the school. Students who received a magnet were asked to place the magnet on someone else’s locker to spread positivity throughout the school. We also decorated placemats for Slayton Senior Dining.
K-Kids recently completed their big fundraiser for the year. Students were invited to purchase May Baskets for their friends. K-Kids made 880 May Baskets with some help from our adult Kiwanis friends! We made sure that each student in the West building received a May Basket. The K-Kids group has decided to donate proceeds from this fundraiser to the families of Brooks Almich and Amanda Hirman (Principal Todd Burlingame’s daughter) in their fight against cancer, as well as to the Ronald McDonald House in Rochester, MN.
K-Kids celebrated the end of a successful year with a bowling party at Alley Cat Lanes on May 3. Thanks goes out to bowling alley owner, Pete Beerman for donating treats for the kids to enjoy while bowling. I would personally like to thank the Slayton Kiwanis (especially Marv Nysetvold) and all of the K-Kids parents for supporting our group this year.
