The Rebels had a slow start to the 2023 golf season. Late snow caused many courses to be unplayable. However, soon the sun came out and MCC’s golfers had ideal weather to finish out the season. The girl’s team had many returners with varsity experience. They would go on to win a few meets throughout the season. The Rebels earned the Red Rock Conference Champion title and Section 3A Runner-up title. Two players on the girls team advanced to the Class A State Tournament and had a solid few rounds at Pebble Creek. MCC’s boys had many new players, which led to some tough competition within the team. They played well throughout the season and made a lot of improvements. In the end, they struggled as a team against a tough conference line-up.

Coach DeLong stated, “The girls team worked hard throughout the season in hopes to make a trip to state as a team again. Unfortunately, the girls faced some tough competition in the section, and only two individuals were able to advance. Next year will be no different, as MCC will still have a challenge when it comes time for sections. We saw great improvements from each girl, and you can tell how much time they are putting in over the off-season. On the boys side, there was a lot of competition, just within the team, to earn one of the six varsity spots. Each boy will be working just as hard next year to get in the starting line-up. I hope next year the boys team will be able to post scores that are more competitive within the conference and section.”

Two of MCC’s girls represented well at the Class A State Tournament. Senior Eliese Meyer led for the Rebels, carding a 196 and finishing in 47th place overall. Rachael Huso finished nicely with a two day total of 206 landing her in 60th place out of 86 golfers. Though the girls were not able to make it as a team this year, MCC represented very well.

At the end of the season banquet, Most Improved Golfer honors went to Rachael Huso, Hudson Schryvers and Logan Mihin. Huso improved her average by 3.9 strokes, Schryvers by 6.4 strokes and Mihin by 12.8 strokes. However, the entire MCC golf team made huge improvements throughout the season. Low Average honors went to Trey Veldhuisen and Elie Meyer. These two players fought each meet and were always looking for ways to improve their game.

The 2023 season was another tough year for MCC, but the Rebels rose to the occasion and had a strong season overall. Coach DeLong thanked the four seniors again for their dedication, and also thanked the returning golfers for their commitment to the successful golf program. Just like any program, the golf team is excited to have many returners, as well as new faces, join next year. The players and coaches hope to continue their streak of success and have a strong 2024 season.
