On Tuesday, the Murray County Central Theatre Department was down to singledigit practices remaining before its presentation of the fall musical “Grease.” And while it wasn’t a dress rehearsal day, the students and crew still took it seriously and made the practice time count as they whole-heartedly look forward to entertaining the audience with their high-energy performance of the popular coming-of-age play set in the late 1950s.

Show times are 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 10 and Saturday, Nov. 11, as well as 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 12. All shows will be held in the high school auditorium. “The audience can expect a nostalgic journey to the 1950s, filled with iconic music, high-energy dance routines and a timeless love story at Rydell High,” director Isaac Harms said. “You’ll enjoy vibrant performances of classic songs like ‘Summer Nights’ and ‘Greased Lightnin,’ along with dazzling choreography. The show’s humor, witty dialogue and colorful costumes create a lively atmosphere for the viewers.”

More than 40 students are involved in the entire production, including cast, stage crew, lights, sound, sets and orchestra.

Along with Director Harms, who teaches social science at MCC, his wife, Kirsten Harms, a kindergarten teacher in the district, serves as the assistant musical director. Mike Helgeson, the 5-12 band director, is in charge of the orchestra. “The students love the music,” he said. “It’s so catchy and fun to sing. The dancing that is involved makes the practices very enjoyable.”

Director Harms said auditions for “Grease” took place during the first week of school and that something new was added every week. Dress rehearsals have now started taking place periodically throughout the final two weeks. Everyone is looking forward to the arrival of the hot rod “Greased Lightnin’” in the next few days, he added.

Despite being enjoyable, the large show to watch.”

William Lundy is cast as the good-looking and popular Danny Zuko, while Lauren Larson portrays the cute, wholesome Sandy Dumbrowski. Rizzo is played by Danica Behnke, while Grace Buesing is cast as Jan. Lauren Stoel portrays Marty and Brealyn Damm plays Frenchy. Zuko’s friends include Roger (Walker Biren), Doody (Logan Stoel) and Sonny (Carson Engelkes).

Audience members can expect to see the usual attire on the main characters — the Burger Palace Boys (“greasers”) and the Pink Ladies — in addition to the well-known scenes, such as the high school hop, the hand-jive contest and the pajama party. “We will be performing the school version of ‘Grease,’ so it will be appropriate and fun for the entire family to have a memorable and entertaining evening watching our students showcase their amazing talents,” Harms said.
