Several local men got together to help Glen Yotter clean up the site of what was once Harold’s Service in Slayton over the past weekend.
On Saturday, May 18, 2026, fire totally destroyed the Harold’s Service building on Slayton’s Broadway Avenue. The building was not only owner Glen Yotter’s livelihood but also his home.
The fire started while Glen was trying to loosen a stuck bolt by using an oxyacetylene torch.
According to Yotter, he couldn’t get the hood of the vehicle open to battle the flames and the entire building was on fire within moments.
Yotter said he called 911, grabbed his dog and got out.
After the fire, the building was declared a loss by the state fire marshal. The brick walls were weakened and bowed, and the I-beams that held up the roof bent in the extreme heat of the fire.
Yotter’s father Harold started the business in 1965 and sold it to Glen in 2010.
