By Arnold Krusemark Next week will have Halloween as well as the end of another month - October. We hope your plans will go ok. This writer remembers what we did for Halloween in country school. Usually we had a Halloween party. The kids (and teacher) got dressed up in costumes, we had Halloween games which included a lunch of sort. That was the only time we remember bobbing for apples (literally), hanging a doughnut by a string and seeing who could eat theirs the first without any of the doughnut hitting the floor. And other games. Our mothers helped out, of course. In this writer’s case the costume was sewed and became a new pair of pajamas after Halloween. So much for that. We rather missed that teacher when she moved on.
And one year we had an evening program with song, plays and the like instead of a Christmas program. I remember one of the kids playing a ghost. An old sheet (with eye holes) was his costume.
Then it will be November. So far we have had only one night when it got below freezing. November was when intermittant snow comes. Our family rule of thumb is that the snow which comes for Thanksgiving stays the rest of the winter. We’ll see about this year.
Be sure to get your outside work done in time. And inside keep your house plants cared for and watered. Until next week.
