By Arnold Krusemark This is the week prior to Halloween. If you have not already done it, secure a good sized pumpkin to be used as a Jack o’Lantern and then carve it. Sometimes this will be a good family project with any kids you may have. Then insert the candle (real) and ignite it for display. Sometimes we have put together a display of smaller pumpkins on the side.
No carving done until time to use the pumpkins for pie. And one neighbor also bought a bunch of miniature pumpkins placing one next to each dinner plate. Made a good table decoration. And quite memorable too. And a point of discussion too.
Otherwise except for the first frost the days have been cool but not freezing. We’ve already discussed gathering in the remaining garden produce. And we have other yard and garden work to get done before it gets too cold. Maybe there will be one last lawn mowing. In many years past we also banked the hose with straw either loose straw or straw bales. That helped keep the cold away from the house during the winter.
And whatever else needs doing both outside and inside. And bring in the flower pots of what you took outside for summer too. They might need some fertilizer along with the weekly watering.
Until next week.
