The days continue to get shorter and the weather cooler. The forecasts have included warnings for frost and snow but we haven’t seen either - yet. In the meantime its time to get prepared.
Outside in past years this was the time we took off the window screens, washed the windows, and then put on the storm windows. Sometimes that included window repairs too. In the garden we remember on nights when the forecast was for frost, we took out an old blanket and covered up the tomatoes and a few other things. Then we took off the blanket(s) come morning.
And on a real cold night we finally decided to bring in whatever remaining garden produce we had. The items grown above ground were first to get inside the house. Then the root crops. Usually we waited until it was going to be a hard freeze before getting going on fetching the remaining produce.
Then, inside the house we had chores to do too. When we still heated the house by oil burner we never had to worry. When it got cold enough for father the oil burner would magically appear in the living room. And we would get the outside oil tank filled up too. Now with a furnace it is still time to fill the oil tank, but also have a service call to change the filter and give the furnace a good checkout.
Other things had to get done too before it got too cold. Oh yes, we also needed to clean out the garage so the car could come inside the winter nights. And finally, we have to water our house
