By Arnold Krusemark Another month has gone by. It is now October - the last month we can usually count on for our yard and garden to grow. Soon the leaves will be falling too. We’ve said many times a season does not come in a day. There are quite a few signs when Spring is coming. And so on the rest of the year.
We’ve already seen an early sign of Winter coming. No, it wasn’t the weather. In years past columns we’ve taken note of the next year’s calendars starting to arrive in our mailbox in July. This past week the first Christmas Seals arrived. Maybe we should get our Christmas shopping done too.
Well, October has arrived. The days are getting shorter, the weather is cooling down and our gardens are also producing. We have been thinking ahead. Our gardens are producing and much will get stored for our winter meals and other uses. The holidays are ahead too. The main October holiday will be Halloween. This is the last outside holiday we can count on without snow. Halloween now has lights, and other things in addition to costumes and related. Thanksgiving has stayed fairly ordinary - too close to Christmas apparently.
As for our house, home, yard, and garden we still have some work needing doing. And it must be done between rains, nights and remaining weeks. In addition to storing your garden produce, remember to shop at Farmers’ Market days to help with your stored inventory. Also get a pumpkin if you didn’t grow one - to be made into a Jack o’lantern for Halloween.
Whatever you need to get done, don’t wait until the last minute or freezeup or first snow or whatever.
Back inside the house be sure to water your house plants.
Until next week.
