By Arnold Krusemark This weekend will include our annual Memorial Day, also known as Decoration Day, when we decorate (and visit) the cemeteries of our departed relations and friends. There is usually a cemetery service too which has changed over the years. Due to rain, one time, it had to be relocated to the school auditorium in Slayton at the last minute.
The cemetery services pointed out the tombstones with flags to identify military veterans buried there. Then there has been the service at the creek/river bridge to commemorate those who were buried at sea. This was followed by a service of late in an auditorium somewhere. And that has been followed by a Legion lunch.
Memorial Day is also the unofficial start of Summer too.
As for our garden we look forward to the first of our produce from our garden. We note a few flowers are there. As for garden produce, in this writer’s case this has included the first rhubarb, asparagus, and, of course radishes.
And our garden work has continued too. Now begins the hoeing season too. We hope you remembered Memorial day for its purpose rather than just another holiday to celebrate.
Until next week.
