By Arnold Krusemark It is now May and Spring outside is late. Normally garden, yard, and farm field work are in total progress. This past week this writer went to Mankato. We could find only one or two fields which had the ground worked up ready for planting. There will be some long days (and nights) for at least some area farmers.
Probably similar work for area gardeners. We suspect Saturdays will be mostly gardening (unless it rains). Plus the yard work. Some yard work will be raking the lawns but also removing dead tree branches which fell over winter. In past years we remember having a few spring bonfires to help clean up.
As for our gardens, usually we started with plowing or tilling to get the soil ready, then mark the rows, dig the furrows, and plant. When done planting then hope for rain to give the seeds the message to sprout and grow.
Then we watch to see the first of the plants (usually radishes) growing above ground. We should still have our first radishes for the dinner table by the end of May. Other things get planted of course - rose bushes, maybe horseradish and rhubarb.
And then back inside the house, if you move some house plants outside for the summer its probably safe to do that now (unless a late freeze comes along). And water the remaining house plants too.
Until next week.
