By Arnold Krusemark September is now half over. Autumn (or Fall) will officially arrive next week. Outside some of our vegetation has also announced the coming of Autumn. Nearby is a field of field corn. Two weeks ago all the corn was in total green. This week they are mostly brown awaiting the corn picker and harvest.
Closer some trees are already browning their leaves. Then the leaves will fall. These are softwood trees. Hardwood trees have leaves which will turn bright colors including yellow and red leaves. Very beautiful.
We remember some parts of the country - especially New England states where bus tours will be forming to sightsee the fall foliage along with other historic sights. Northern Minnesota - north of Duluth in the arrowhead region - also has national forests of hardwood trees too.
For about two weeks they are most beautiful. Mention is made in the news media along with the progress of coloring. Since many people will drive to view the scenery, they also strongly suggest if you do not actually live in the Duluth area, be sure to confirm nighttime accommodations as most hotels and motels fill up. This writer drove the route one year and saw a moose in the forest. The sight was perfect - right out of the National Geographic magazine pictures.
Back home, we’ve seen some gardens with a good collection of beautiful flowers. Back home, outside our windows we see the remnant of another flower - a dandelion stem. We think we remember one time many years back when this writer brought in a dandelion. Mother made the most of it. She got out a vase, added water and the flower and placed it in the middle of the kitchen table.
Also inside the house, be sure to water and care for your house plants. Until next week.
