GREEN THUMB

By Arnold Krusemark August is nearing its end and so is Summer. There are two ends of Summer -first the equinox starting Autumn (near the end of September) and Labor Day.

As for Labor day, many things come to an end along with other beginnings. For one thing, Labor day is the usual start of school - at least for kids and other students (college). That means the end of summer jobs and other events. And the usual last of the sweet corn stands.

And then getting ready for school. Kids usually get school clothes and supplies. And with the days getting shorter our gardening and yard work will be reduced to mainly week-end work. In the Spring we made our gardening plans. Now its Fall items - of things to get done before Winter arrives.

We will discuss Fall chores in future columns. For the moment we are quite happy with how well our gardens have done this year. At least we didn’t get hailed out. And we didn’t get flooded out either like the late Texas news has reported. With floods it is not the water that washes out homes and other, but the cleanup work that follows.

Our Fall work will include bringing in whatever our garden produces for use during the winter. And other things to be done both outside and inside. Back inside the house be sure to water and care for your house plants.

Until next week.
