The inspiration for this week’s column came from the current issue of Northern Gardener magazine. By now your garden should be producing well. This means you still need to tend to your garden in addition to hoeing and watching your garden produce grow.
Check your plants frequently for things which shouldn’t be there - plant diseases, along with insects. If you see insects, first try to identify them. Getting rid of the wrong kind may take insecticide. Or hand removal. When we still raised geese, the geese frequently followed us to the garden and then ate whatever insects they saw. Bug removal is best first thing in the morning.
As for weeds, also check them. Remove before they go to seed. This will help keep new weeds from starting. Your garden plants need sunshine too. The best time to remove weeds is when they are small and just after a rain.
You may need to water your garden. Be sure to water the soil, not the plant leaves. Then there’s fertilizer. We’ve talked about that in past columns. This will keep you busy most every day.
Remember to also take care and not get sunburned.
