GREEN THUMB

By Arnold Krusemark Some years back (in the 1940s I think) there was a contest to create a slogan for Minnesota. The winning slogan was “Minnesota, theater of seasons”. We have sure had good examples of that. Last week we had bad weather with the roads iced over and cold. This week it was warm enough it was nearly 70 degrees outside and some wore their T-shirts leaving this coats inside.

It is now the middle of March. Spring will come next week (March 20th). That’s on the calendar. From past experience, it usually takes another month to get the weather warmed up for Spring. We have not had any real winter yet this year. We still can get it - with snowstorms into April. But snowstorms then won’t last long.

Then farmers will be ready to start planting. And gardeners will get out into theirs. Planting for gardeners will consist of planting seeds or transplanting started plants. That way the gardens will have a good start on this year’s produce.

We’ve mentioned our Uncle Nor started his gardens in the basement in cake pans. Then the plants got moved to the outside garden when the weather was ready.

And other item. We are short on moisture in general. Remember the phrase April showers bring May flowers. We need a good start for our gardening with good rains.

Lastly, we also remember when things got going early and the fruit trees flowered out and then a freeze killed off the blossoms. No apples that year, and no apple worms the next. We will be watching the weather for sure.

Inside the house, care for your house plants too.

Until next week.
