By Arnold Krusemark Christmas Day is fast approaching. In past columns we’ve discussed some Christmas Day dinners and events. Back when we usually got together with area family and had a good time. As the families grew the table settings also did. Then the kids grew up and departed. Also departing were friends and relatives who passed on.
The dinners were always good. In addition to the meat, we usually also harvested a squash from our garden. And followed that with pies for desert. That was one time when we could always expect mince meat pie. That has gone out of popularity since although the mix is still available.
Mother had to have several pies ready - one or more at noon and extra for the lunch before the company went home. And then there were the Christmas presents. Some were quite memorable. This writer can remember some excellent presents received over the years. And after the Day had passed we usually had leftovers for at least a few days.
Then the final week of the year. Some bills needed paying. Charity checks made out and delivered (or mailed). And the house needed cleaning. And remember to water your house plants too. That should keep you busy for a while.
