By Arnold Krusemark July is here and we are happy to note Farmers/Market days are now going on. In past years Slayton has had them Thursday mornings and sometimes Saturday mornings too. Check if you if time.
Otherwise with a slight pause in rainy days some gardening needs doing - usually weeding. And some produce is now available for additions to the dinner table.
Later on when the produce quantity is more, we do remember in past years preserving it to be eaten later on and during the winter. In the days before refrigeration it was usual to can the vegetables in fruit jars. Then when electricity came we could store in the freezer.
We still probably have some fruit jars in the cellar from the early 1940s. Probably still waiting for our dinner table when needed. In the meantime we also check the garden to see when we will get the first squash, cucumbers and other produce. Sweet corn stands are now quite obvious too. This helps kids keep busy and gives them some income too.
These are some things to keep you busy in your garden and kitchen. Don’t forget to water your house plants too.
Until next week.
