GREEN THUMB

With this week’s column the month of June will be over. And so will half the year.

The year is going faster than we used to know. It is still June for now - and calendars for next year are already coming in the mail (and asking for a charity donation).

Back to this year. That means we now have an idea of how our garden will do this year.

This coming week will include July 4th - Independence Day a big holiday for nearly everyone. As for our garden it is also the time we try to eat the beginning of some of our garden produce. - even if only a few small potatoes, small pea pods and so on. We didn’t mention it is also now past the end season for asparagus. And if your didn’t raise any yourselves you might check the Farmers’ Markets in the area. In years past Slayton has had them on two days - Thursdays (across from Minnwest Bank) and Saturdays (next to the closed Country Host Restaurant). Come early for best choices.

As for July 4th itself, in years past our family had a family reunion for many years. At the start it was a big reunion of people but trickled down as the years wore on.

And finally was replaced by children’s weddings and parents’ funerals. We still have one event - July 4th - the evening fireworks display. Some years we acquired some fireworks of our own and had a morning firecracker session followed by sparklers and other things. If it rained, we had to reschedule the home fireworks display in view of the one from the sky.

Otherwise your and our yard and garden work continues.

The yard needs mowing and
