When Jesus Christ said on the cross, “It is finished;” what exactly did He mean?
Well, He finished the work His heavenly Father had given Him to do. He came to seek and to save those who are lost. He was the Lamb of God who taketh away the sin of the world.
Jesus, and He alone, was the only person on earth, who could qualify as the sacrifice for all the sins of mankind. 1 John 3:8 says, “For this purpose was the Son of God manifested, that He might destroy the work of the devil.” Satan of course thought that since Christ was on the cross, he had won. The dominion he stole in the Garden of Eden, would be his, now and forever.
However, he was wrong. Jesus had no sin and was raised from the dead. “It is finished” meant whosoever will believe in Christ, and become His disciple, could have everlasting life.
It also meant that the Temple is finished, for we believers are now the temple of God. It also meant that all the sacrificing of animals was done; Jesus Christ was the final sacrifice.
