Day one of sections took place this past Wednesday in Worthington at Great Life Golf and Fitness. On the boys side, 10 teams participated in the first round of play. For the girls, only 5 teams participated as well as a small group of individuals. In the 3A meet the top four teams and top twenty-five percent of remaining individuals qualify for the second and final day of the tournament. The Rebels set a goal to advance on to day two for both teams. The girls were able to advance on as a team, but the boys team came up just six strokes short.
The boys had a difficult start to their round, teeing off first in the morning. The course was extremely wet due to the previous night’s rainfall, and many holes had standing water or unplayable areas. Despite some challenging playing conditions, the boys played extremely well. They finished the day with a team total of 373, with four scores in the low nineties. Although it was not enough to advance them on to day two, it was one of MCC’s best team scores throughout the season.
MCC’s girls teed off in the afternoon, and got to play in a bit better conditions. The green speeds changed throughout the day as the weather got warmer, which was a huge challenge for the Rebels. They finished out the day carding a team total of 411. MCC is just one stroke out of first place heading into the second day of competition.
MCC’s girls had a solid performance individually on day one. Ava Johnson finished the day tied in first place with a 93. Johnson carded 4 pars throughout the day, and made a few big putts. Rachael Huso followed right behind with a 94 carding 4 pars as well. MCC’s team score was rounded out by Lizzie Daniels (101) and Natalie Einck (123). Lucas Kuball came in with the low score for the boys. He shot a 47 on the front and a 44 on the back, for a total of 91. Dawson Schreier and Jett Veldhuisen also advanced on to day two for the Rebels. They will be teeing off with the other individual qualifiers. MCC’s golfers need to continue making small improvements and move past “bad” shots and holes if they want to clinch the section title and advance on to the state tournament.
