The MCC Rebels finished their non-conference schedule on Thursday night (February 8) when they played host to the Windom Area Eagles. The Eagles have had a strong season, winning 18 games, playing in the Big South Conference. The Eagles are not only talented, they are also young with just two seniors on the roster. The Eagle’s ability to score was going to be an issue for the Rebels, who struggle to score and though the Rebels held the Eagles to one of their lower point totals of the season, the Rebels couldn’t keep up.
Windom is a team that believes in shooting layups and three-point shots. They don’t shoot many shots from 10 feet and out to the three-point line. They also like to push the tempo and get shots up to the rim. They did that on Thursday. Haidyn Sammons is a quick point guard who gets the ball up the court quickly and she dominated the first half with 14 points, most coming on layups. Leah Hauge is a six-foot forward who scored all of her points at the free-throw line of the three-point line. The Rebels
played a solid first half staying in striking distance of the Eagles, as MCC trailed at the half 34 to 21.
The Eagles would pull away some in the second half, as the Rebel turnovers increased in number and the Eagles got more and more easy shots. The Rebels, on offense, scored one point less in the second half than in the first but the Eagles only scored 3 less than their first-half total. Three Eagles would score six points or more in the second half, while the Rebels didn’t have one. The Eagles picked up the win, 65 to 41.
The Rebels turned the ball over 20 times in the game, while forcing 17 which isn’t all that bad against a team like WIndom Area and how fast they like to play.
The biggest problem was, Windom scored on the Rebel turnovers and the Rebels were unable to do the same. The Eagles made 11 free throws, the Rebels only made 3.
The Rebels top scorer was Kelli Miller with 9 points all coming from the three-point line, while Jayda Hellewell scored 7. Kate Blankenship had a nice game for the Rebels scoring 5 points.
The Rebel seniors played their final regular season home game against the Eagles.
