GET THE DIRT

By Kathy Schwartz, Murray County Master Gardener Track the weather so you can prepare for early frosts. Be ready to protect your plants from early cold snaps.

Newly planted trees of any size need at least one stake on the windward side. Use one or more soft, loose ties to stop excessive, but not all swaying. Three equally spaced stakes are best. Remove them when the tree gains strength. Wrapping the trunk will prevent sun scald and other (animal) damage.
