GET THE DIRT
By Kathy Schwartz, Murray County Master Gardener Lift potatoes and onions from the ground after their foliage dies back. Spread the harvest in a cool, dry, well-ventilated, shady spot to cure for about 10 days. Put onions in a mesh bag and hang to dry in a dark place. Put the potatoes in burlap bags or cardboard boxes covered with newspaper. Store both at 34-40 degrees.
Warm soil and cool temperatures make this a good time to: (re)seed, aerate, apply nitrogen fertilizer, and treat for perennial broadleaf weeds.
Remove or bury tomato plants at season’s end. Infected plant material can be placed in a home compost pile that gets hot.
