By Kathy Schwartz, Murray County Master Gardener Fertilize established (mature) trees and shrubs in late fall or early spring when active growth occurs. These trees and shrubs do not require a lot of nitrogen and typically get enough from lawn fertilizer applied nearby.
Planting perennials, trees, and shrubs in the fall is a good idea. The roots continue to grow until soil temperatures cool to about 45 degrees. New roots produced in the fall will help in the spring.
If weeds get out of control over the summer, be sure to pull them up before they set seed to avoid having even more weeds next summer.
