GET THE DIRT

By Kathy Schwartz, Murray County Master Gardener It is best to water plants in the morning so they can dry during the day to fight off diseases. Remove any plant material that shows signs of disease so it doesn’t spread.

Tomatoes are mostly water, so they need water. Do not pull the fruits from the vine. Twist or snip it off. Do not store in the refrigerator, keep them at room temperature. They can be dried, frozen, or canned.

Container plants, window boxes, and hanging baskets need fertilizer every 2 weeks. Pellets or tables of slow-release fertilizer will provide enough nutrients to see them through the autumn.
