The Casey Jones State Trail, a cherished landmark named after the legendary railroad engineer Casey Jones, who tragically perished in a 1900 railroad accident, is a testament to his enduring legacy. The trail was one of the first state trails authorized in Minnesota when State Trail legislation was enacted in the late 1960s.
The Woodstock section of the trail encompasses various surfaces, offering a unique experience for outdoor enthusiasts. It includes:
•A 12-mile stretch of former railroad grade between Pipestone and Woodstock.
•An eight-mile paved segment from Pipestone to County Road 67.
•Two miles of grade gravel surface leading into Woodstock.
•Two miles of unmaintained, natural surface towards the trail’s end.
The ribbon cutting will be followed by a festive supper in Pipestone near the trail’s end, where attendees can enjoy a meal and participate in drawings for exciting prizes, including youth bikes and helmets. This event marks a significant milestone in the trail’s development, and the Friends of the Casey Jones Trail are eager to celebrate with the community.
The Friends of the Casey Jones Trail play a vital role in advocating for the trail’s development and maintaining its current segments. The trail is owned by the State of Minnesota and managed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
We invite all ages to partake in this celebration of progress and community spirit. Come and be a part of this memorable occasion, enjoy the scenic views, and help us honor the legacy of Casey Jones.
