On January 5, 2026, US Army Vietnam Veteran, Richard “Dick” Knapper, was presented with a Quilt of Valor following the meeting of the American Legion Post 322 Currie, MN. The quilt is given in honor, appreciation and thanks for the veteran’s service; and to bring comfort, peace, and healing to the veteran.
Dick Knapper, entered the US Army May 24, 1971. He completed basic training in Fort Lewis Washington. He completed AIT training in St. Louis, MO. He was honorably discharged June 13, 1973, with the rank of E4, Specialist. On behalf of his fellow veterans, Dick continues to serve, helping veterans with access to healthcare or other benefits, providing rides to VA appointments, and visiting veterans in nursing homes and hospitals. Dick, we thank you for your service.
American Legion Post Commander, Chris Lampers, and Dennis Johnson, welcomed family and friends, and shared with the audience information about Dick and his service. Kerry Cassens and Lizzie Bramstadt from Patriotic Piecers, Quilts of Valor group from Pipestone, presented the veteran with his quilt, welcomed Dick home, and thanked him for his service. Kerry then spoke briefly about the national Quilts of Valor Foundation.
Quilts of Valor Foundation (QOVF), was established in 2003 by Catherine Roberts to “cover Service Members and living Veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor”. Since 2003 more than 436,429 quilts have been created and presented to American veterans and active military service members.
Anyone can submit a QOV nomination for a veteran or active military service member to receive a QOV quilt.
