Slayton Public Library’s monthly Documentary Club starts this month! Running from October 2026 through March 2027, this club is similar to a book club, but for short, educational films. Each month, you are invited to gather together, watch a short documentary (1 hour or less) with your friends and neighbors, and afterwards engage in a round-table discussion. A volunteer host will prompt the audience with questions to unpack the film’s themes and gauge their reactions.
The kick-off is set for Wednesday, October 14, 2026, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Slayton Public Library and is a special teen-topic night with free punch and popcorn! Preteens (ages 10–12), teens, parents, and adults are invited to watch Exhumed: A History of Zombies (51 minutes, rated TV-PG) and discuss afterward. In this 2020 PBS Digital Studio special, host Dr. Emily Zarka explores 200 years of zombie stories in folklore and film to show what these monster tales reveal about human fears. After the movie, Library Director Dwayna will lead a round-table group discussion about the film’s main ideas: fears and anxieties, religions, and movie monsters. Look for the event on Facebook and share with your friends!
Movies screened at Documentary Club come with public performance rights thanks to Minnesota PBS’ Viewers Like Us Club and Kanopy, a digital movie streaming app available with your library card. “If you’re a library card holder at either Slayton Public Library or Fulda Memorial Library, you already have access to thousands of movies, shows, and documentaries online with Kanopy,” said Dwayna, Library Director. “To unlock that access, you set up a Kanopy account using your library card. Once your account is set up, you’ll be able to browse from your computer, smartphone, or smart TV. The best part is that Kanopy is adfree! Even paid streaming services like Netflix and Disney+ are interrupting paid subscriptions with ads.”
All Documentary Club events are free. The library is also looking for volunteer hosts to help lead future group discussions this winter. The dates and times will vary from month to month; look for events posted on Slayton Library’s Facebook page and website at www.slaytonlibrary. org.
